Non-Bois Comparison with Shopify and WooCommerce
Architecture & Flexibility
- Magento– I have been working with clients here in London. The more I speak to the clients, the more I understand the mind and direction of the business. When a business needs control on their technical infrastructure, Magento, without a doubt, is the top contender and best choice for the brand with such requirements. Mainly because magento offer that infrastructure as the core features, it is self-hosted and fully open-source, giving complete control over code, server environment, and customisation. The architecture is modular and built around dependency injection, plugins, and service contracts. This makes it extremely flexible but also complex.
- Shopify have build a very strong platform and when it comes to architecture, it is closed but have flexibility on the theme development side if the work, but in general it is closed ex customer dont get access to the database etc, but it works for customers who dont really need that as it take the headach away of managing the system upgrades and patches etc. it is a fully hosted SaaS platform. You don’t touch the server. Customisation is done through Liquid templates and apps from their marketplace. It’s deliberately opinionated — you work within Shopify’s framework.
- WooCommerce is built on top of WordPress architecture and added as a plugin. It is lightweight, it is open-source and self-hosted like Magento, but far simpler in architecture. Customisation is easy, and it relies heavily on hooks, filters, and third-party plugins. It positions itself as less complex and works best for simple business requirements. When it comes to localisation for ex a business website for the UK and Germany in Dutch, I must say it is not as easy and as sophisticated as Magento. The same applies to multi-store architecture, B2B and B2C features in general.
Cost
- Magento Open Source is free to download, but the total cost of ownership is high simply because you need to manage and maintain the hosting, development, security, and general maintenance, which can run anywhere from £5,000 to £30,000+ annually, depending on complexity. Suffice to say that all the upgrades and patches are released for free by Adobe, and simple patches usually take 15-30 mins.
- Adobe Commerce has different plans starts around $22,000/year and scale based on revenue. I have been lucky enough to have a London office in the same building and have close relationships with the team. We always work with our clients to negotiate the best price possible, and our relationship pays off in that sense.
- Shopify price is also very based on the plans and business requirements, it ranges from $39/month (Basic) to $2,000+/month (Plus), with transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments. Another cost to keep in mind is the monthly application cost, where is Magento Ecosystem offer Free and One-Off paid extensions, shopify have Free Tier and mostly monthly paid extensions, which adds to the final cost and differs business to business.
- WooCommerce is free as a plugin, but similar to Magento, costs add up through hosting, premium themes, and extensions. Typical annual cost ranges from £500 to £10,000 for most stores.
Scalability
- Magento is a very flexible system, and with the right team on board you can build yourself a very sophisticated system. Our London-based Magento Specialists have done and delivered this over and over again, such as handling large catalogues (100,000+ SKUs), complex pricing rules, multiple warehouses, and high traffic volumes well when properly configured and hosted. It’s built for this. We are Magento Certified Developer based in london when it comes to complex or easy customisation, you have a helping hand can help you locally. Along side of that we are Certified Magento Partner work with client based in London.
- Shopify It’s scales well for traffic and orders since Shopify manages the infrastructure, but as I said earlier, it hits limitations for very complex product structures, custom pricing logic, or B2B scenarios. Shopify Plus addresses some of these and cost $24,000 annually + the Transaction Fee.
- WooCommerce is best when it comes to scaling less complex systems; it can struggle with very large catalogues or high concurrent traffic. Performance depends heavily on hosting quality and plugin optimisation. It’s generally best suited for small to medium stores.
Multi-Store & Internationalization
- Magento has the best in class multistore and internationalisation features. They are very easy to set up and require Zero development. Magento has native multi-website, multi-store, and multi-language support built into its core. You can run entirely different stores from a single installation with shared or separate catalogues. Can you believe that it has all of these features available in Open Source (Free)?
- Shopify requires a higher and more expensive plan if you wish to manage multiple stores and internationalisation. An alternative is to set up different stores for regions/languages, but you will need to have separate subscription plans as well, which makes it complex and expensive.
- WooCommerce offer this feature with another bolt-on plugin, and it is not as good as Magento, but it is available and works fine, as it supports multi-language through plugins like WPML, but true multi-store requires WordPress multisite or separate installations.
B2B Capabilities
- Magento/Adobe Commerce has strong native B2B features such as company accounts, custom catalogues, quote management, purchase orders, tiered pricing, requisition lists and much more. We also build quick orders, scan or order for our many clients based in London.
- Shopify is now setting new milestones as a B2B platform however, B2B features are only available on Plus Plan, but they’re relatively new and less mature.
- WooCommerce relies on third-party plugins for B2B functionality, which can be inconsistent, and I would recommend building your own for your very own business needs.
Ease of Use
- Magento is easy to use, provided you have the right partner to initially give you training on the platform rather than let you wander around. We provide face to face magento training by our Magento certified specialist based in london office. We can only arrange this online, but I must say it has a steep learning curve for both developers and store administrators. The admin panel is powerful, but it can feel overwhelming.
- Shopify without a doubt, is one of the best and easy to use system when compared to Magento and WooCommerce. All our Shopify clients love the system when it comes to ease of use.
- WooCommerce is an easy-to-use system,, but the complexity grows quickly as you add plugins. It is not very pleasant as some plugins arent well maintained. Otherwise system is easy to use.
Developer Ecosystem
- Magento developers are easily available and can be quite expensive; however,r developer rates vary from £40 to £150 an hour. It has a very strong community behind and Adobe is also supporting the system by releasing the upgrade and security patches as part of there adobe commerce eco system.
- Shopify developers are more readily available. The learning curve is gentler when compared with Magento, but deep customisation can hit walls.
- WooCommerce has a very strong development community simply because it has been around for a long time, and developer prices are quite reasonable.
API & Headless Commerce
- Magento has both REST and GraphQL APIs out of the box, making it well-suited for headless commerce and custom integrations with ERP, CRM, and PIM systems. When you have complex requirements, it works best.
- Shopify has a strong Storefront API and supports headless through Hydrogen/Oxygen, but some backend functions are still limited via API.
- WooCommerce has a REST API, and it is based on the wordpress ecosystem. It can work headlessly, but it’s important to point that it is not as robust for complex integration scenarios.
So, the question is which platform is the best one for your business?
- Magento – Magento is categorised as the most flexible and commerce feature-rich platform with almost all important e-commerce requirements as part of the ecosystem, especially when it comes to managing Large catalogues, regulated categories such as Pharma, complex business logic, B2B requirements, multi-store needs, or businesses that need full control and have the budget for development and infrastructure.
- Shopify – As a Certified Shopify Partner, in our opinion shopify is best for Businesses that want to launch quickly, prefer simplicity, don’t need deep customisation, and want someone else handling hosting and security.
- WooCommerce is best for Small to medium businesses already on WordPress, with moderate catalogues and budgets, who want flexibility without the complexity of Magento.
